I have always been attracted to the color red, to red in clothes, red in movie posters, to red jewelry. I even had a red room for some point with red curtains! I love to mainly customize my character head to toe in a mix between red and black. Ultimately my favorite way to add red is through my curly hair!
I started my hair dying journey at about 14 years old. I actually wasn’t supposed to dye my hair to begin with. My mom wanted me to “wait until i was 18!!!” But i was living with my grandma at the time so me just freshly being in high school, i fibbed and said she told me yes, then it began…
In the beginning i had bleached and dyed just my bangs, green of course because i loveddd weed and was obsessed with the color green lol. Then the bangs changed to purple (started getting REobsessed with monster high). I had tried to move on and go for silver (obsessed with black white and silver back then), at that point i did not know much about hair especially the result of putting color ontop of color then trying to go for silver so of course it didn’t work out unfortunately. It looked like a purple green blue unicorn vom, it was horrid, and i refused to keep it for long. i eventually just wanted to cover it up at that point so i went for the handy dandy black box dye👏🏽. i know at a point i had tried to use that color oops and i honestly can’t even remember how that turned out since it has been so long, all i can remember is it smelled rancid LOL. Then the big red came…
i had started putting just red hair dye that was meant for darker toned hair over my boxed died hair my senior year. It was an extremely dark red but not at all burgundy, im pretty sure i had tried dark burgundies and did not enjoy the out come or got tired of it quickly so i just stayed away from them. i had took the chance and bleached my whole head regardless of hearing terrible stories back to back about curly hair not taking bleach well. Hell i even heard stories about non poc just not takin bleach well. And well :P i rocked the dark red hair for quite some time and tried out multiple brands. Color works with curls, my loves, yes! Then i moved outta the dark red phase and was obsessed with bright red and i still am! I had only tried bleaching it when needed and ive only bleached it enough times to count on my fingers in total! (For my curly haired babies, this IS part of the key.) i have been tied to and loyal to the red for the past 3 years almost four and i wouldn’t want it any other way! Like i stated i have experimented with all types of reds, (no not box dye (whenever possible, opt for professional-grade dye. Professional dyes typically contain higher quality pigments and fewer harsh chemicals, which can help preserve your hair’s health and color vibrancy.) NOR SPLAT DON’T COME FOR ME👋🏽🤙🏽), this is an informal educational list + blog post of various reds (mainly vibrant… LESS copper and burgundy tones) that i have used on myself and what I’ve seen work on others that i’ve wanted to try for myself! And please for the love of all don’t use that SPLAT !!! Aside from that, as always, enjoy my loves!

hows the maintenance?
Red hair has a reputation for being difficult to maintain. If you don’t treat it right, your red will fade quickly and turn brassy or orangey. the last thing you want is your color fading away after just one wash! You need something that’s going to keep your shade strong and vibrant all day long. Always use specially formulated shampoosfor colored hair and color-safe conditionersto keep the color from being stripped by regular shampoo. You can also try shampoos that contain red pigment to keep your color fresh. Use a sulfate-free shampoo that’s gentle on colored hair. Sulfates can strip the color from your hair, accelerating the fade. Look for shampoos labeled as color-safe or those specifically formulated for red hair. After shampooing, apply a color-safe conditioner to help seal the cuticle and lock in moisture. This step is crucial for maintaining the health of your dyed hair and ensuring the color stays vibrant for longer. Now the shampoo and conditioner AREN’T required for vibrant long lasting red BUT it does help when using them. I personally never minded not using them but when i have they did improve the time in between re-dyes Having regular trims and not washing your hair too often should all be part of your colored hair care routine. Try not to wash it within the first 48 hours after the initial dye. When you are washing it do use tepid or cold water only. Hot water can open up the hair cuticle, allowing the fresh color to escape more easily. Along with using a good deep conditioner once a week to nourish and moisturise your hair.
I have about 3 tips regarding maintenance for the first 48 hours after initial dye but honestly i say this is useful ALWAYS for keeping red hair maintained! Avoid heat styling tools: If possible, steer clear of heat styling tools immediately after dyeing. The heat can not only damage your hair but also contribute to faster color fading. Minimize Sun Exposure: Keep your newly dyed hair out of direct sunlight. UV rays can degrade the red pigments quickly, causing your vibrant color to fade. Consider wearing somethin like a hoodie or hat if you’ll be spending time outdoors. Silk or Satin Pillowcases: To minimize friction and prevent color from rubbing off, sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase however many nights after dyeing your hair or just consider completely switching! For my poc babies, our hair thrives more when we do have that satin pillow mixed with that satin bonnet because breakage and frizz is more preventative! I think of it just taking extra steps to care for your more fab hair. By taking these steps throughout your red hair dye journey, you are giving your new color the best chance to set deeply and last longer!
How often to touch up color?
The answer, of course, depends on how often you wash your hair, how vibrant you like your color, and what shade of red you go with (as you can see this list mainly has brighter red tones and less copper and burgundy shades!). If you have an orangey hue, you’ll probably want to touch up your color more often than someone with auburn locks. And if you’re washing your hair every day, you might need to dye it more frequently compared to someone who only washes their hair once or twice a week. My ultimate FAV TIP is ion™ Color Defense™ : Color Defense Sulfate Free Shampoo : Sulfate-free Shampoo can be used on all hair colors and types. ion™ Color Defense™ Sulfate-free Shampoo gently cleanses and strengthens color-treated hair while helping to increase the life of your hair color, preventing color fade and protecting hair from heat-styling and environmental damage. Ultimately, it’s up to you to experiment and find out what works best for your hair, but every 4-6 weeks is a good place to start.
Red looks fab in any season of the year for any occasion. Whether you want a simple switch up in color or want to give yourself an instant confidence boost without changing anything about your style, i more than ever recommended checking out red hair dye !!!
